Benchmark Equipment Company in Hotel F&B Magazine-Hotel folding tables are a necessity in the hospitality world, but not all are created equal. They can be cheaply made an fall apart easily, or they can be built to last, like the tables manufactured by Maywood Furniture Corp. Scott McMinn, VP of Benchmark Equipment Company, knows the importance of high-quality folding tables, so he buys Maywood's Original Series banquet and conference tables. McMinn particularly likes Maywood's multi-use Original plywood table. "It's a utilitarian workhorse. The durability has been terific," he says. Further, "Maywood's tables are easy to use and to clean. They are leaders in the business." The tables may be functional and durable, but that doesn't mean they're unattractive. "I like the laminate coverings, the styles, and the aesthetics of the tables," McMinn says. Beyond the construction and style of the tables, McMinn feels that the experience of working with Maywood is also exceptional. "It is a solidly reputable company that sticks to core business and handles it very well," he says. "I am delighted to work with Maywood. They are a hotel banquet and conference table vendor that is receptive to client wishes and demands."-AV

How did the Original series evolve?
A: Maywood Furniture was the manufacturer of the Howe® 200 Series for over 70 years. In 2000, Maywood began selling the product under the Maywood Original Series Name.
How long has the Original Series been in production?
A: It has been in production for over 70 years. Every year, product improvements and enhancements make it a stronger, more durable, and lighter table.
Is the Original Series base strong and better than the Standard Series wishbone leg?
A: The Original Series base is certainly stronger, but much of your decision making is based on your personal preference and what type of table you have been using.
Why would I purchase the Original Series over the Standard Series?
A: The Original Series, whether Plywood, Mayfoam, or Laminate, is typically purchased for the upscale hotel market.
The Standard Series is usually purchased for restaurants, catering halls, and party rental businesses.
What is the recommended edging for the Standard Series?
A: We recommend our unique crimped aluminum edge for strength and durability, especially for tables used frequently. Black vinyl edging is also available upon request.
Why should I choose the crimped edge over any other edging available?
A: We have used and improved on this edging since the early 1930's when our tables first went to many major hotel chains, banquet facilities, and convention centers. Maywood's channel aluminum edge is crimped on to the table maintaining the integrity of the plywood better than aluminum or vinyl "T" edging. It protects the table top by covering the wood where it would otherwise chip and break off, especially corners, and has a small "tooth" on the bottom to keep its grip on the table. This edging, only available from the Maywood factory, can now be used to increase the strength and durability on laminate (like Formica brand) tables as well.
Do you offer laminate tables with particleboard core?
A: We do not offer particle board.
Am I able to get laminates other than those shown on the Available Finishes?
A: Yes, most laminate colors are available as well as others. Matching colors is best done with sample chips, which we will be happy to send you, for special design projects.
I have a special request for an unique table. Can Maywood help me?
A: We can make just about any size or shape you need. Please give us the exact measurements and we will work with you to complete your special project.
What is the difference between an oval and a racetrack?
A: The oval table is a egg shaped table that comes to a point at each end, which makes it difficult to seat people at the ends. The racetrack table is more like a rectangle with the corners rounded for easy end seating. For a better idea, please see the DIAGRAM for a clearer explanation.
Are children's tables available?
A: Yes, many children's tables are 22" high. Please call to inquire about any non-standard heights.
Do you sell leg sets separately? What about parts for pedestal tables?
A: All parts can be purchased separately. Please provide size and type of table you will be using the parts for, and we will do the rest.
How are tables packed for shipping?
A: Any quantities of 10 tables or more will be stretch-wrapped on skids. Cartons are used for 10 or less, but any quantity can be cartoned upon request.

In 1930, DeSaussure Equipment (now Maywood Furniture) began its operations, manufacturing tables and other items for the Hospitality Sector. Even at the beginning, the DeSaussure family, in maintaining the highest manufacturing and business practices, was interested in cost savings and using renewable resources. One of the ways to accomplish this objective has been to produce high quality products which can stand the test of time and not be constantly replaced. In fact, tables manufactured and sold to the Original Waldorf Astoria in the 1930's were still in use in the late 1960's! Thus, this commitment to quality, although not identified as a 'green' strategy, of using supplies and operations that produce a product with a higher quality and life cycle, has been a part of the Company's manufacturing strategy since Day One. In addition, striving for cost savings through energy conservation has also been an integral part of the DeSaussure/Maywood Furniture manufacturing ethos.
Over the years, as technology has improved, the Company has continued its focus on quality and adopting both environmentally friendly and renewable product components. Under the Maywood Furniture brand name, our customers can expect that this focus will continue as we pursue the combined objectives of profitable manufacturing and utilizing sustainable components wherever possible.
Over the years, Maywood Furniture has made many advances in the manufacturing process and quality of our products. We recognize, and have always recognized, that good manufacturing practices and being environmentally friendly are not incompatible. We will continue the pursuit of both, in our factory and with our suppliers, to achieve the highest quality, most sustainable, products in the marketplace. In other words, being 'green' isn't a detriment, but a cornerstone to our business practices.
Going Green Operations
Over the past several years, we have purchased new state-of-the-art production equipment and material handling equipment for faster production and less strain on our workers. We are already using environmentally friendly means of manufacturing in several key areas. For example, we use a powder coating line to paint 100% of our products. We no longer use any solvent-based paints in our factory. Our paint line has a vacuum system that takes in all unused paint that is sprayed back into a storage tank, so there is no waste. All liquids used to clean the metal being painted, e.g., rails, chasses, table trucks, wishbone legs and so forth, are recycled as well.
All machinery that requires a liquid cooling system such as spot welders, band saws, and machinery for maintenance purposes, all use closed-loop water-based systems.
Any scrap metal left over from manufacturing or maintenance including steel, aluminum, brass, or copper, is separated and recycled accordingly.
All products that are laminated pass through a cold-press glue press, which is a water based adhesive system that has no formaldehyde or other harmful chemicals.
We make our own pallets for shipping, so any wood that is left over from manufacturing our tabletops is recycled here.
Every forklift and piece of material handling equipment is powered by electricity, so there is no use of propane gas in our factory.
We only use protective packaging material, corrugated boxes, stretch wrap, when absolutely necessary, to ship our products.
All of our lights in the factory are energy efficient fixtures.
Our Suppliers Are Going Green
A primary component of Maywood Furniture's tables is top grade clear faced plywood. Wood products themselves are by definition naturally renewable, and harvested properly, will provide a beautiful, light, strong, durable and environmentally safe end product. Wood products are carbon stores; carbon accounts for 49% of the mass of wood. It requires less energy to produce wood, and wood is the least fossil fuel intensive of any industrial manufacturing component.
Whenever possible, Maywood's suppliers use sustainable trees for its plywood and other lumber needs so as not to damage or degrade the forest's ecosystem. For example, our poplar plywood is 100% sustainable as it is plantation grown specifically for plywood production. Additionally, our birch plywood is produced from mostly sustainable forests, with no clear cutting allowed. This discourages over-foresting and insures greater protection for soils, waterways and wildlife.
Since we manufacture every component to our folding tables, we purchase large amounts of steel, in both coil and tube form. All steel purchased is approximately 20% recycled.
The aluminum molding used for our tops contains about 20% of recycled material.
The majority of our high-pressure laminate is supplied by Wilsonart International. By specifying Wilsonart Laminate as the decorative surface on our products, you may be eligible for LEED points in the following areas:
Recycled content (MR Credit 4)
Local/Regional Materials (MR Credit 5)
Certified Wood (MR Credit 7)
Also, it is important to note that Wilsonart Laminate does not contain urea-formaldehyde resins. For more information, go to www.wilsonart.com.
Most of the packaging materials we purchase include recycled material. In fact, the corrugated boxes we use are made of 30% recycled material. The paper rolls we use for packaging include 30-40% recycled paper. The stretch wrap used on the outside of our skids contains about 20% recycled plastic.. Finally, all sales and marketing materials, like our catalogues and price lists, are printed on recycled materials.
In every part of our business, suppliers are hearing the call for more energy conservation and higher recycled percentages and are responding.
